Exploring the Best Home Automation Solutions for Students

As a college student, I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of home automation, but I’ve never had the chance to dive into it until now. My boyfriend and I are finally moving out, and I want to start experimenting with smart home devices before we settle into our new place. I’ve got a few Govee LED strips tucked away in my closet and some Feit smart bulbs, but honestly, they’re not the best quality. I’m considering upgrading to something more reliable, like Govee bulbs, which I’ve heard great things about.

I’ve also been trying to set up a sunset and sunrise automation, but the Feit app is giving me so much trouble. It keeps disconnecting, and I’m not sure if it’s worth the hassle. Maybe I should look into other apps or platforms that integrate better with my devices.

One thing I’m really excited about is the idea of a digital wall calendar and to-do list. We currently use a whiteboard, but a digital one would be so much cleaner and could sync with our phones. Plus, automating our bedtime routine sounds like a dream! I’d love to have the TV play a specific playlist while the lights dim gradually.

Another project I’m considering is upgrading our fan to a smart fan. We have a portable AC setup, but I don’t want to replace the AC unit just yet. Maybe a smart fan could help regulate the airflow better. I’m also thinking about setting up an automation to turn off all the lights and some devices when neither of us is home.

I’d love to hear from others who are in a similar situation—students or young professionals looking to experiment with home automation on a budget. What devices have you found to be the most user-friendly and cost-effective? Any tips or tricks for someone just starting out? I’m eager to learn and can’t wait to start tinkering!
