Exploring the Tuya ZigBee Smart Knob: A User's Journey

I recently acquired the Tuya ZigBee Smart Knob and have been experimenting with integrating it into my home automation setup. While the process has been enlightening, it’s also been a bit of a puzzle. Let me share my experiences and thoughts on this device.

First off, pairing the knob with my Home Assistant (HA) setup was straightforward. It shows up as a device with a few options, primarily for identifying itself and monitoring the battery level. However, the real challenge lies in getting it to perform the actions I want—like controlling lights with a simple twist or press.

I’ve read about the concept of quirks in the context of this device, but honestly, I’m still a bit fuzzy on what they exactly do and how they work. From what I gather, quirks are tweaks or workarounds that help devices function as intended within HA. But without clear documentation, it’s been a bit of a guessing game for me.

Here’s what I’m aiming to achieve:

  • Single press: Turn a light on or off.
  • Double press: Maybe dim the lights or switch to a different preset.
  • Rotation: Adjust the brightness smoothly.
  • Long press: Perhaps trigger a scene or a more complex automation.

So far, I’ve managed to create some basic automations, but they don’t always behave as expected. For instance, clicking the knob does toggle the light, but rotating it doesn’t seem to affect the brightness consistently. I suspect this has to do with how the device reports its state or how HA interprets the input.

I’ve also noticed that the device has some built-in options for long and double presses, but these aren’t always reliable. It feels like I’m missing a crucial piece of the puzzle to make everything work seamlessly.

In my research, I’ve come across mentions of the TS004F model, which seems to be related to this knob. However, most discussions revolve around using it as a four-way switch, which isn’t exactly what I need. I’m assuming this knob is a variation of that model, perhaps modified for rotational control.

To move forward, I plan to:

  1. Dig deeper into quirks: I need to understand how to implement and configure them properly.
  2. Experiment with different automation setups: Maybe breaking down the actions into simpler steps will help.
  3. Seek out community resources: Forums and documentation are invaluable, and I’m hopeful someone has tackled a similar setup.

If anyone has experience with this device or can shed more light on how to utilize it effectively, I’d be thrilled to hear your insights! Let’s make this smart knob work its magic!
