Exploring WLED Integration with Frigate and Home Assistant

I’ve recently dove into the world of WLED and it’s been an absolute blast! For those who haven’t tried it yet, WLED is an open-source firmware for ESP8266/ESP32 devices that turns them into Wi-Fi controlled LED controllers. Pairing it with Frigate and Home Assistant has opened up a whole new realm of possibilities for my home automation setup.

I started by installing the WLED firmware on an ESP32 I had lying around. The process was straightforward—just a matter of flashing the firmware and connecting it to my RGB LED strip. Once it was up and running, I immediately noticed the smooth color transitions and the ability to create custom patterns. It’s like having a mini-lighting studio right in my living room!

Integrating WLED with Home Assistant was seamless thanks to the built-in integration. I set up some basic automations using Node-Red to trigger specific lighting effects when motion is detected by my Frigate security camera. For example, when the camera detects motion at night, the lights now pulse in a predefined pattern to deter intruders while still keeping the area well-lit.

One feature I’ve been particularly impressed with is WLED’s support for custom patterns and scripts. I’ve been experimenting with creating my own patterns using the built-in pattern editor. It’s incredibly intuitive and allows for endless creativity. I can even sync the lighting effects with music playing through my speakers for a fully immersive experience.

If you’re looking to add some flair to your home automation setup, I highly recommend giving WLED a try. The combination of WLED, Frigate, and Home Assistant has truly elevated my smart home experience. I’d love to hear how others are utilizing WLED in their setups—feel free to share your tips and tricks below!
