Exploring Wyze Camera Integration with Synology Surveillance Station

I recently decided to integrate my Wyze cameras with my Synology Surveillance Station, and I thought I’d share my experience and some tips for anyone looking to do the same. While the process wasn’t entirely straightforward, it was definitely worth the effort for the added functionality and security it brings to my home setup.

First, I followed Wyze’s official guide to enable RTSP on my cameras. This involved accessing the Wyze app, navigating to the camera settings, and enabling the RTSP feature. It’s important to note that RTSP support can vary depending on your camera model and firmware version, so I recommend checking Wyze’s support page to ensure compatibility.

Once RTSP was enabled, I moved on to setting up the cameras in Synology Surveillance Station. I opened the app, navigated to the ‘IP Camera’ section, and selected ‘Add Camera.’ The interface was user-friendly, and I appreciated the option to define custom settings for each camera. I chose the ‘User Define’ option, which allowed me to manually input the RTSP stream details.

Here’s where I encountered a minor hiccup. Initially, I tried using the default RTSP path provided by Wyze, but it didn’t work. After some research, I realized that specifying the port number explicitly was necessary. I adjusted the RTSP URL to include the port (554), and that did the trick. The final URL looked something like rtsp://admin:password@192.168.1.10:554/live, and it connected seamlessly.

One thing I found particularly useful was the ability to customize camera names and descriptions within Surveillance Station. This helps in organizing multiple cameras, especially if you have a complex setup. I also took advantage of the motion detection and recording features, which are handled efficiently by Synology’s platform.

After setting everything up, I tested the integration thoroughly. I monitored live feeds, reviewed recorded footage, and even set up notifications for motion events. Everything worked smoothly, and I was impressed by how well the Wyze cameras integrated with Synology’s ecosystem.

For anyone looking to replicate this setup, I recommend the following steps:

  1. Enable RTSP on your Wyze cameras through the Wyze app.
  2. Open Synology Surveillance Station and navigate to the ‘IP Camera’ section.
  3. Select ‘Add Camera’ and choose the ‘User Define’ option.
  4. Enter the RTSP URL, ensuring to include the port number if necessary.
  5. Customize camera settings as needed and test the integration.

This integration has significantly enhanced my home security setup, and I’m excited to explore more advanced features in the future. If you have any questions or run into issues, feel free to reach out—I’m happy to help!
