Hello everyone, I’m new to the SmartThings ecosystem and home automation, and I’m really excited to dive into this world! I recently purchased the SmartThings starter kit with the intention of using it for garden office security and controlling lighting and some security in my house. However, I’ve encountered some challenges with the range of my multisensor and ST plug, which I’d like to share and seek advice on.
Initially, my multisensor worked sporadically and then failed during testing for range. It’s currently not installed on the front door of my office, which is about 15 meters away from the hub. My ST plug worked on the first day but failed the next day. I’ve read a lot about extending range on this forum and have a few questions.
I’ve heard that using ZigBee bulbs as repeaters can help extend the range. However, I’ve read that there are different protocols for ZigBee bulbs: ZLL and ZHA. It seems that bulbs running on the ZHA protocol are better for repeating signals. Is there a list anywhere of which bulbs are ZHA-compatible, ST-compatible, multi-color or white, and available in the UK? This would be incredibly helpful!
Another question I have is about power. My understanding is that only powered devices can repeat signals. Can a lightbulb be switched off and still repeat a signal? I’m worried that a guest or the kids might use a dumb switch, which would turn the bulb off and potentially disrupt the signal. Ideally, I’d like to avoid buying smart bulbs and then a Z-Wave Fibaro dimmer to control them. I’m hoping that installing a couple of smart bulbs outside the house would be enough to relay the signal to my sensor and other devices in the office.
I’m also considering sticking with ZigBee as I’d like to get some Sonos speakers in the future. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance for your help. ![]()
