Extending SmartThings Network via Ethernet: My Experience

Hi everyone! I’ve been exploring ways to extend my SmartThings network using Ethernet, especially since I have a workshop 250ft away from my house. I’ve managed to run an Ethernet cable from my main router to the workshop, but I’m curious about the best setup to ensure reliable connectivity for my smart devices.

Initially, I considered adding a hub in the workshop, but I wanted to explore other options to keep things streamlined. After some research, I discovered that using a PoE (Power over Ethernet) switch combined with a Wi-Fi access point was a great solution. This setup not only provides stable Ethernet connections but also extends Wi-Fi coverage to my workshop.

I also stumbled upon the idea of using Ethernet over Powerline adapters, which seemed promising. However, I found that they didn’t offer the consistent performance I needed, especially with multiple devices connected.

One challenge I faced was ensuring that all devices were on the same subnet. I learned that configuring the access point as an AP (Access Point) mode rather than a router mode was crucial for seamless integration with my existing network.

I’d love to hear how others have successfully extended their networks, especially those who’ve integrated multiple smart devices across different locations. Have you encountered any unique solutions or faced similar challenges? Let’s share our experiences and tips!
