Matter Binding would be great! Not seeing a lot of manufacturers doing that yet, but it would be a welcomed feature!
I’m in the US so don’t have the EU version of the switch, but you should be able to decouple the relay from the switch in the Aqara app settings. Is this not the case? For the US version of the switch the parallel is Settings > Switch Settings > Switch Settings. Hopefully there is a parallel on your version.
I do not have an Aqara Hub, but I have 7 Apple Thread Border Routers / Home Hubs. At the moment I use my light switches via Zigbee2MQTT and my bulbs via Matter over Thread in Home Assistant, because some month ago it was not possible to configure the decouple mode on an Aqara H2 EU light switch, when it was in Thread mode.
With Home Assistant we are now able to configure Matter bindings. But without being able to configure the decouple mode via Home Assistant, I can’t check the binding functionality.
How are you using your light switch (Thread or Zigbee)? Do you have an Aqara Hub?
According to the Matter compliance document here there is no support for binding to lights.
There’s no Binding cluster but since that could be missing in the document, the ultimate proof is that there’s no On-Off cluster support as client, which would be required to bind to the On-Off server of the light.
Checking the documents is not fail-proof though, sometimes there’s no document for the latest versions and sometimes vendors use Fast-Track for recertifications and the document belongs to another device which might not have the exact same features.
On the Home Assistant discord I found a guy, who successfully bound an Inovelli White dimmer with an Aqara T2 bulb:
He also added a second binding for the dimming cluster to the same switch so now both on/off and dimming are controlled on the T2. dims quickly and smoothly:
Some posts later he wrote, that on/off/dim also works with a Nanoleaf essentials NL67 bound to the same inovelli switch:
There were some issues with deleting the bindings/acls. But with the latest official Home Assistant Matter Server this issue should be solved
matter alpha also reported about the binding feature while in beta phase:
Yeah, ok, now I understand you. Sorry, English is not my native language.
So my feature request is absolutely valid, we need the Matter binding cluster and the decoupling functionality for the Aqara H2 EU/US light switch and other comparable Aqara light switches.
It’s a valid request indeed, I’d also like to have wireless dimmers (battery powered buttons) or even sensors with binding capabilities to control lights independently of hubs or automations.
Fortunately, lights don’t need support for bindings, every Matter light would work. Explicit binding to lights support is only needed in the device that controls the light, be it a switch, button, sensor, etc. since it has to send the specific commands a light expects like on, off, etc.
@hoppel118 Hey Hoppel! I’m sorry, but there’s no information in our reference content about when you’ll get the Matter features to decouple the relay and bind smart lights to a Matter over Thread H2 light switch.
