Flashing Lights and Smart Home Automation

Hey everyone, I just wanted to share my experience with setting up flashing lights in my smart home. I’ve been using a Hue bridge with 25 IKEA bulbs, and I’ve been trying to get them to flash when a motion sensor is triggered while I’m away. It’s been a bit of a learning curve, but I’ve managed to figure it out!

First, I had to understand how the Hue bridge communicates with the bulbs. I learned that you can set up scenes and triggers through the Hue app, but I wanted something more customizable. That’s when I discovered the power of rules in Hubitat. I set up a simple rule that triggers the flashing lights when the motion sensor detects movement.

Here’s how I did it:

  1. I created a scene in the Hue app that sets all the bulbs to flash.
  2. I linked the motion sensor to the Hue bridge in Hubitat.
  3. I wrote a rule that activates the scene when the motion sensor is triggered.

It’s been working perfectly for the past few weeks! I love how customizable my smart home is now. The flashing lights not only act as a deterrent but also give me peace of mind knowing my home is secure.

If anyone else is trying to set up something similar, don’t hesitate to ask. I’d be happy to help!

Cheers,
Kasper
