Aqara FP2 Presence Sensor – Precision Automation with mmWave Detection

Overview

The Aqara FP2 Human Presence Sensor uses mmWave radar to detect precise, micro-movements, even breathing, allowing it to sense true human presence with unmatched accuracy. It divides a room into up to 30 zones, tracks up to 5 people, and supports posture detection.

Connectivity: Wi-Fi (2.4GHz)

Integrations: Aqara Home, Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home

Mounting: Wall or ceiling

Power: USB-C

Usage & Reliability

β€’ Indoor use for bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, bathrooms, and offices.

β€’ mmWave radar ensures highly accurate presence detection.

β€’ Works in total darkness.

β€’ Up to 30 custom zones.

β€’ Detects up to 5 people simultaneously.

β€’ Local processing ensures automations continue even offline.

β€’ Pet mode helps reduce false triggers.

Accessibility & Ease of Use

The FP2 enhances accessibility by enabling true presence-based automation. Lights stay on while someone is present, zones trigger actions based on location, and bed detection automates night routines.

Examples:

β€’ Sitting on the sofa β†’ lights stay on.

β€’ Entering the kitchen β†’ task lights activate.

β€’ Lying in bed β†’ activate sleep scene.

Practical Scenarios

Scenario Use Case Example
Bathroom Lighting Bathroom Lighting Ensure lights stay on FP2 detects presence continuously
Bedroom Comfort Bed detection Triggers sleep scenes automatically
Living Room Zones Living Room ZonesDifferent actions by zone Desk = bright, Sofa = warm
Energy Efficiency Optimise HVAC Turn off heating/cooling when empty
Security Unexpected presence Send alert if someone enters

Aqara Home Automations (WHEN β†’ IF β†’ THEN)

Example 1: Turn on lights when entering Zone 1

WHEN: Accessories β†’ FP2 β†’ Zone 1 Occupied

IF (optional): Accessories β†’ Light β†’ Is Off

THEN: Accessories β†’ Light β†’ Turn On

Save as 'Zone 1 Auto-Light On.’

Example 2: Turn off lights when room becomes empty

WHEN: Accessories β†’ FP2 β†’ No Presence Detected

IF: Accessories β†’ Light β†’ Is On (optional)

THEN: Accessories β†’ Light β†’ Turn Off

Save as β€˜Lights Off When Room Empty.’

Example 3: Trigger Sleep Scene when Bed Zone is occupied

WHEN: Accessories β†’ FP2 β†’ Bed Zone Occupied

IF: Time β†’ Repeat β†’ Night Only

THEN: Scene β†’ Activate Sleep Mode

Save as β€˜Bed-Detected Sleep Mode.’

Example 4: Bathroom fan using humidity + presence

IF: Outdoor Weather β†’ Outdoor Humidity β†’ Rise to Specified Value

THEN: Accessories β†’ Fan β†’ Turn On

Save as 'Bathroom Smart Fan.’

Apple Home Automations

(Apple Home does not support full FP2 multi-zone configuration directly, but each zone created in the Aqara app appears as a separate presence sensor inside Apple Home, allowing zone based HomeKit automations.)

Examples:

β€’ Zone Presence Detected β†’ Turn on lights

β€’ Zone No Presence β†’ Turn off lights

β€’ Include zone sensors in Goodnight routines

Tips for Best Use

β€’ Mount at 1.2–2m height for the best accuracy.

β€’ Ceiling mounting improves zone precision.

β€’ Avoid pointing at mirrors.

β€’ Use Edge Zones for doorway detection.

β€’ Adjust sensitivity per zone.

β€’ Combine with lighting, HVAC, and shade devices for advanced routines.

Final Thought

The Aqara FP2 is one of the most advanced presence sensors available. Its mmWave precision, multi-zone detection, and deep Aqara Home integration create highly adaptive smart home experiences using the modern WHEN β†’ IF β†’ THEN automation framework. Not only can improve the daily lives of people using this little sensor, but it can make a huge real impact for those with disabilities that make it hard for them to move about and reach certain switches. It is an invaluable product that can enable people to do more, save your electricity bill and generally be an asset to your smart home.
