From Aqara G4 to G410: Real-World Experience, Key Improvements & A Crucial Power Tip!

Upgrading from Aqara G4 to G410: Real-World Experience, What’s Better, and a Crucial Power Supply Tip!

Hi everyone!

Having used the original Aqara Smart Video Doorbell G4 for quite some time, I recently made the transition to the Aqara Doorbell G410. Since many users in the forum frequently ask whether upgrading is worth it and how to get the most stable performance out of it, I wanted to share my real-world hands-on review and some technical findings.

1. Build Quality & Camera Performance (Day & Night)

The first noticeable difference is the video clarity and dynamic range handling:

  • Resolution & Sharpness: The 2K / high-res feed provides significantly crisper facial details, particularly when someone approaches the door under bright sunlight or high contrast backlight.
  • Night Vision & Motion Artifacts: The G4 occasionally suffered from ghosting or blur when visitors moved quickly in the dark. The G410’s sensor handles exposure adjustments much faster, meaning license plates and faces remain legible rather than washed out.

2. Connection Stability & Chime Repeater

With the G4, one of the common hurdles discussed here was Wi-Fi packet drops between the doorbell unit outside and the indoor USB chime repeater when passing through thick exterior walls.
With the G410, the wireless handshake between the chime and the doorbell has noticeably improved in reliability. Live view initialization latency in both the Aqara app and Apple Home is much snappier (down to ~1.5–2 seconds on a local network).

3. :star: PRO-TIP: The Power Supply for the Indoor Chime (Game Changer!)

If you experience stuttering video streams, framedrops on HomeKit Secure Video (HKSV), or delays during simultaneous local NAS/SMB recording: check your chime’s USB adapter!

Many people (including myself initially) plug the USB chime into an old 5V 1A (5W) phone charger. However, when the chime has to decrypt video, handle HKSV encoding, and write to local storage simultaneously, that causes voltage drops (brownouts).

My recommendation: Power the chime repeater with a dedicated, high-quality 5V 2.4A (12W+) power adapter.
Once I upgraded the power supply, all micro-stutters, delayed chime sounds, and dropped frames completely disappeared!

4. Apple HomeKit Secure Video (HKSV) & Matter Integration

In our home, smart home integration is central (Apple TV 4K hub with HomeKit Secure Video).

  • HKSV: Instant pop-ups on Apple TV when the doorbell is pressed with zero delay.
  • Matter / Local Events: The button press and person detection signals are passed cleanly to local smart platforms without depending on cloud latency.
  • Facial Recognition: On-device AI facial recognition reacts faster and with fewer false alerts compared to the first-gen G4.

5. Final Verdict: Is it worth the upgrade?

If you:

  • Want crisp 2K video without backlighting issues
  • Want faster live-feed load times in Apple Home / Aqara app
  • Value smooth local recording and dependable HomeKit integration

…then the G410 is a very solid and mature step forward over the G4.

Are you running the G4 or G410? How do you have yours powered (batteries or transformer)? Let me know below — happy to answer any questions or share configuration tips! :rocket:

:rocket:

Hi there! That’s a really great and relevant question.

In my case, it was actually both!

At first, I suspected a poor Wi-Fi signal through exterior walls. However, whenever multiple tasks ran simultaneously (like HomeKit Secure Video encryption, live streaming, and local storage recording), the old 5V 1A phone brick suffered from temporary voltage drops (voltage sag).
This caused not just heavy video stuttering, but the chime repeater’s processor would choke or silently reboot, leading to complete “No Response” drops in Apple Home and temporary disconnections in the Aqara app.

Long-term stability:
I swapped the power brick for a dedicated 5V 2.4A (12W) adapter (I used a standard 12W IKEA USB charger).
Since making that swap, the connection has been 100% rock-solid for weeks on end. Zero disconnects, snapshots load instantly, and the 2K live feed opens smoothly in about 1–2 seconds.

Quick tip when switching:

  1. Unplug the chime for 10 seconds.
  2. Plug it into the 2.4A adapter.
  3. Press the outdoor doorbell button once to let the doorbell and chime establish a fresh, stable handshake.

Definitely give a solid 2.4A+ charger a try — it completely cured the drops for me. Let me know how it goes! :rocket:
