Okay, so quick backstory: I went all-in on Aqara without owning any Apple gear. No iPhone, no iPad, no HomePod. Yeah, I know, bold move. Most guides out there assume you’re deep in the Apple ecosystem, but I wanted something that worked well with Android, Alexa, and even some Home Assistant wizardry later down the line.
Here’s the deal—Aqara stuff can totally work outside the Apple bubble, but there are a few gotchas:
- I started with the M2 hub. Crucial move. It’s super flexible and plays nice with Alexa and even Google Assistant.
- Pairing was a breeze via the Aqara Home app on Android. Everything showed up just fine—motion sensors, window sensors, buttons, all smooth.
- For voice control, I linked my Aqara account to Alexa. Took a couple of minutes and suddenly I could say “Goodnight” and it would shut down lights and sensors. Super satisfying.
- Later, I dove into Home Assistant. I used the HomeKit Controller integration (yes, without owning any Apple devices), and it detected the M2 hub like a charm.
Not saying there weren’t hiccups—I had some funny issues where sensors didn’t update instantly in HA, but tweaking a few settings via YAML magic fixed that.
So yeah, if you’re an Android user or just anti-walled garden, Aqara can still be a solid choice. Anyone else gone down this route? Got some tips or bumps to share?
