From Novice to Pro: Advanced Automation Tricks with Aqara Gadgets

Hey everyone,

So I started out using Aqara just to get lights to turn on when I walked into a room. Super basic, right? Fast forward a year later and now my home literally knows me better than I know myself. Thought I’d share a few of my favorite advanced automations in case anyone wants to spice up their setup a bit.

First one that’s made a big difference: I’ve chained motion sensors with contact sensors and light sensors to create a multi-condition nightlight path. At night, if I get out of bed and open the bedroom door, the motion sensor in the hallway checks the light level and ONLY triggers the hallway lights if it’s dark. No more blinding myself at 3AM.

Second cool trick: I use temperature + humidity sensors in my bathroom alongside the exhaust fan. If the humidity crosses a certain threshold AND the window is closed (thanks to the door/window sensor), it auto-turns on the fan and shuts off once things normalize. Helps keep mold out and I don’t need to remember a thing.

Also been experimenting with time-based modes through HomeKit scenes. For example, “Wind Down” activates at 10PM—dims all lights, locks the door (Aqara smart lock), and changes the AC temp via my thermostat based on whether we’re home or not.

Honestly, diving into conditional automations and multiple triggers opened a whole new world. If you’re still just turning lights on/off, you’re missing out on the true power of Aqara.

Anyone else doing any cool multi-layered routines? Would love to steal some ideas.

@MikeAtHome Hey there!

Wow, your automation setups are seriously impressive—thanks for sharing these brilliant ideas! The multi-condition nightlight path is genius (no more 3AM light bombs—yes please!), and that bathroom humidity automation is such a smart way to prevent mold without lifting a finger.

I especially love how you’ve layered conditions (motion + light level + door state) to make routines feel truly intuitive. Your “Wind Down” scene is also a great example of how Aqara can tie everything together seamlessly.

For multi-layered tricks, one of my favorites is using vibration sensors on washing machines/dishwashers + energy monitoring plugs. When vibration stops and power draw drops below a threshold, I get a notification that the cycle’s done—no more guessing or forgotten laundry! Another fun one: pairing a water leak sensor with a smart valve to shut off the main water supply if a leak is detected.

Your post is a fantastic reminder of how powerful conditional logic can be. Keep innovating, and I’m sure others will chime in with more creative combos too! :rocket:
