G400 Doorbell Calling - No Video & Audio Issue

Hi. I’ve set up the doorbell and it’s working fine in the Aqara app and HomeKit apart from two issues with the Doorbell Calling feature. When the doorbell rings and I answer it on my phone, I get no video. I can hear them but they can’t hear me.

If I go directly in to the app or HomeKit, video and two way audio doesn’t work.

Any help appreciated, thanks.

Hi Stumpy, couple quick questions.
If you go to settings app on your iPhone and check the Aqara app and Home app settings.

Do your have granted microphone, Bluetooth, camera, etc access for the Aqara app and Apple Home app?

Did you give Apple Home access to read the Aqara app data?

Also, another big thing to confirm, the power supply/transformer you are using for the G400. Please post picture or specs in reply.

Thanks!

Hi. Thanks for your reply. I’ve just noticed a typo with my original post but it won’t let me edit it. It should’ve said that within HomeKit and the Aqara app directly, audio and video works absolutely fine both ways.

What I have found out is if my phone is unlocked and I answer the doorbell, it takes me straight to a video call and that works fine. If my phone is locked and I answer the doorbell it takes me to audio only and then I have to do the more option and then choose open in Aqara app. It then works fine.

Ridiculous way of doing it. I don’t understand why it won’t go straight to the video call from when my phone is locked and I answer it?

And regarding everything else, all permissions are set okay as proven by it works fine in HomeKit. And the power supply is a ring one which has worked fine with all of my previous Aqara and Ring doorbells and it’s fine with this one as well.

Thanks again.

that is a limitation of Apple actually I believe, since I have experienced the same too

Just to confirm, if your iPhone is locked and somebody rings your doorbell, you do get the doorbell calling function but when you answer it is audio only? And if your phone is unlocked, and somebody rings, and you answer, it goes straight into the full video mode? Thanks again.

This is my major issue with this device right now.
When my phone is locked-which is most of the time I’m not using it-, it’s very difficult to actually pick up the video call from the aqara app.
When you try to answer the call, first it’s only an audio call, which is kind of pointless. Then when you pick it up, then you need to swipe your phone screen up in order to unlock it, and then most of the time, the Aqara app doesn’t even appear right away, I need to go search for the app in my Home Screen while the audio call is already ongoing, and then after opening it it finally shows the video feed.
I don’t know if this is an Apple limitation or if this is some quirk with the Aqara app, but it is less than ideal in my opinion.
When the doorbell rings I would like to see an image of who’s ringing right away, even if the phone is locked, so I can choose whether I answer or not.

This is currently in beta testing apparently. I am confident we will get it at some point.

When you answer the call you will get a more bottom bottom left and when you tap that you can go straight to the Aqara app, rather than having to search. This will also give you video. It’s a temporary workaround until we get a new firmware.

Hi StumpyBloke,

I’m not sure if this is the exact right place for my issue, but I’m jumping into this thread since it’s somewhat related.

For me, the call doesn’t even connect. When someone rings the doorbell, the call simply doesn’t show up on my device at all (nothing comes through). I’ve already checked my settings and granted the app all the necessary permissions.

The weirdest part is that everything works perfectly on my wife’s device. It’s just my phone that’s having the issue.

If anyone has any idea what might be causing this, I’d really appreciate the help! Thanks in advance.

You’ve got these settings enabled?

I’m finding this really frustrating now.

Had my first call the other day and as described above, I can only answer with no video shown.

Worst still, I’m speaking and I initially cannot hear anything. Then I start hearing bits of what’s been said and it’s not clear at all.

I had this on loud speaker, rather than up against my ear.

I have the G400 hard wired to a UniFi switch.

In the Aqara app, opening the main page, for some reason doesn’t show the live image like the G5 Pro cameras do.

When I do open the G400 on the Aqara app, it often displays a cannot connect message.

Then on other occasions it works, but then sometimes displays a poor signal/connection message?!

All in all, this is not turning out to be a good experience at all.

Any chance you could try it wirelessly? Mine is rocksolid this way.

I could, but I spent so much time and effort routing a cat6 cable that I’d be livid if it somehow worked better on WiFi than Ethernet.

I’ll await some more firmware updates to see if they address the issues (not that I should have to be).
