Garage Door Sensor Comparison and Tips

Hi everyone, I’ve been pondering the best way to secure my garage door with reliable sensors. After some research, I came across two main options: tilt sensors and magnetic sensors. I wanted to share my findings and experiences in case others are facing the same dilemma.

First, tilt sensors seem like a solid choice for detecting whether the door is fully closed. However, I’ve read that they might not detect a partially open door, say about 1 foot, which could be a security concern. I’ve seen some models like the Ecolink Tilt Sensor and the Monoprice Tilt Sensor, but I’m still unsure about their reliability in detecting small gaps.

On the other hand, magnetic sensors, such as the FDIT Magnetic Contact Sensor, paired with a Z-Wave dry contact device like the Aeotec ZW097, seem more precise. They can detect even slight movements and are easier to install. Some forum members have mentioned using door/window sensors specifically designed for garage doors, though mounting them requires a bit of creativity.

I decided to go with a magnetic sensor setup because of its accuracy and ease of integration with my existing Z-Wave network. The installation was straightforward, and I’ve been impressed with how reliably it detects the door’s status. Plus, the fact that it can send notifications to my smartphone adds an extra layer of security.

If anyone has tips or experiences with either sensor type, I’d love to hear them! It’s always great to learn from others’ setups. Happy tinkering everyone!
