HomeKit notifications don’t work

Hi everyone,

I bought recently the Aqara Camera G5 Pro and the doorbell G400. I set them up with the Aqara Home app first and then I integrated them with Apple home. Everything fine so far except of a notification issue in Apple home.

If motion is detected, the Aqara app sends the corresponding notifications. This works so far. Apple Home also records a clip when motion is detected. The only thing that isn’t working are motion notifications in Apple Home. Does anyone know this issue and can point me in the right direction? I’ve already power-cycled my Apple HomeKit hubs/devices and reset the Aqara devices. I don’t get it?? I also tried multiple notifications settings in Apple home for the devices. Nothing works so far.

Thanks for your support!!

Here are a few things to look into and try:

  • Isolate HSV Classification vs. Any Motion: In Apple Home, open the camera’s accessory settings, tap Activity Notifications, and check if it is set to alert only on specific events (People, Animals, Vehicles, Packages). Change it temporarily to “Any Motion Is Detected”. If notifications start appearing, the root cause is Apple’s Home Hub failing to classify the video frames in time before discarding the alert push.
  • Check Geofencing & Time Filters: In the same Activity Notifications menu, verify the Time and People filters. Users frequently have it inadvertently restricted to “When I Am Not Home” or tied to outdated Apple ID location tracking. Set it to “Anyone At Home” or “Off” to test.
  • Inspect iOS System & Focus Filters: Navigate to iOS Settings → Notifications → Home and ensure Immediate Delivery and Time-Sensitive Notifications are enabled. A silent Focus Mode or Scheduled Summary frequently suppresses HomeKit banners even when clips record in the background.

Good points from markus — one thing that helps narrow it down: since clips are actually being recorded in Apple Home, motion detection and the HSV recording path are working. The camera and the hub are doing their part, so the break is most likely downstream, in the notification path (hub → Apple push → iPhone), not in the cameras themselves.

A few things I’d check in that direction:

  • In the Home app, go to Home Settings → Home Hubs & Bridges and check which hub shows as ‘Connected’. If you have more than one (e.g. an Apple TV and a HomePod), try leaving just one powered on for a test. A hub in standby, or one on a different network segment, can keep recording clips while notifications fail silently.
  • Check the per-camera notification toggle separately for each camera: long-press the camera → gear icon → Status and Notifications → Allow Notifications. The G400 doorbell has separate toggles for the doorbell press and for motion, so check both.
  • Try reproducing it on a second device in the same home (another iPhone/iPad, or a family member’s). If notifications arrive there but not on your phone, it’s the phone’s notification path; if they arrive nowhere, it’s the hub.
  • Also make sure the hub’s software is up to date and that it has internet access — HSV notifications go from the hub to Apple’s push servers, so a hub that lost internet (or sits on a restricted IoT VLAN) can keep recording locally while notifications never arrive.
