How do you prevent lighting automations from undoing a manual change?

When a motion rule, time schedule, and physical switch all control one light, the awkward moment is after someone changes it by hand. Should the next motion event take over, or should that manual choice hold until the room is empty or a timer expires?

I’m curious how people set a clear priority in Aqara Home, Apple Home, or Home Assistant. What triggers your manual override, what clears it, and how do you spot two rules repeatedly changing the same light? A concrete trigger/override/reset example would help.

My setup is Home Assistant, and I’ve set switches to be a ‘manual override’. Motion and time schedules cover most of the day to day, so switches aren’t touched unless we want different behaviour. In most instances I’ve set the switch state to be on a timer (usually keeping a light on for instance), after which normal behaviour resumes.

It needed a little initial tweaking to get timings right, but runs with very few issues now.

Does your override start from a physical button event, or from the switch changing state? I’m curious how you distinguish someone pressing the wall switch from an automation changing the same light, so a scheduled change doesn’t start its own override timer.
