Hello,
I’m looking to set up a home security system that works with HomeKit, and Aqara seems like a good option, but I’ve got a few questions I’m hoping someone can help with!
My home needs 4 door/window sensors, 5 motion sensors, and a siren. I saw that the sensors are available, and it looks like most Aqara hubs include a siren. Did I get that right? Also, is there any difference in how loud the sirens are between the different hubs?
There seem to be 3 versions of the door/window sensors and 3 versions of motion sensors. I’m not sure I get the differences between them.
Some of the sensors use Matter-over-Thread, and others use Zigbee (connecting through the hub to HomeKit). Can I mix both in one system? And can a Matter-over-Thread sensor notify the hub when it’s triggered to start the siren?
Also, I read that the motion sensors include light sensors. Does the light sensor show up in HomeKit too?
Thanks in advance!
@fogpulsar Hello!
It’s great to hear you’re considering Aqara for your HomeKit-enabled home security system. Let’s dive into your questions:
-
Door/Window Sensors and Motion Sensors: Aqara offers a few versions of door/window sensors and motion sensors. The Door and Window Sensor T1 and P2 are notable options. The T1 operates using Zigbee, while the P2 utilizes Thread, allowing integration into the Matter ecosystem. The P2 has added interoperability across multiple platforms. For motion sensors, Aqara provides options that detect motion using either PIR or mmWave technology.
-
Mixing Protocols (Matter and Zigbee): Yes, you can mix Matter-over-Thread and Zigbee devices in one system. The Aqara Home app supports adding both Aqara and third-party Matter devices, including sensors. Just ensure your hub supports Matter to facilitate this integration. This setup allows a Matter-over-Thread sensor to notify the hub and trigger actions, such as starting the siren.
-
Siren in Hubs: Most Aqara hubs include a siren function, but the reference doesn’t specify differences in siren loudness across different hubs. It’s generally a good idea to check the specific hub’s specifications or user feedback for details on this.
-
Light Sensor in Motion Sensors: Indeed, some Aqara motion sensors come with integrated light sensors. This capability is supported in the Aqara Home app and HomeKit, allowing you to view and automate based on light levels as well.
I hope this helps you in setting up a robust home security system! If you have more questions or need further clarification, feel free to ask.
