I’ve always been a coffee enthusiast, but mornings can be a bit of a blur. That’s why I decided to automate my coffee-making process using my smart home setup. Here’s how I did it and why it’s been a game-changer for me!
The Setup
I started by purchasing a single-cup coffee maker with a mechanical on/off switch. The key was to connect it to a ZigBee smart plug. In Home Assistant, I configured the plug as a “Light” instead of a “Switch” to take advantage of the automation features.
The Automation
I created an automation that turns the “coffee light” on for 5 minutes and then off. This duration is perfect for brewing a strong cup of coffee. To make it even more seamless, I added notification audio clips that let me know when the coffee starts brewing and when it’s ready.
Voice Control
For added convenience, I linked the “coffee light” to Alexa. Now, I can simply say, “Alexa, coffee on,” and my morning brew starts without me even needing to get out of bed!
Safety First
One thing I was concerned about was accidentally turning the coffee maker on outside my desired brewing window. To address this, I set the automation to only work between 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM. If I try to activate it outside this window, I get a friendly notification reminding me of the time restriction.
Why This Works for Me
This setup has completely transformed my mornings. I no longer have to wait for coffee or worry about burning it. It’s also been a fun way to integrate my love for coffee with my smart home tech. Plus, seeing the automation in action is pretty satisfying!
If you’re looking to add a bit of luxury to your mornings, I highly recommend giving this a try. It’s a small automation that makes a big difference!
