How I Improved My Home's Energy Efficiency with Smart Devices

I’ve always been interested in making my home more energy-efficient, and with the help of smart devices, I’ve managed to take it to the next level. Let me share my journey and some tips that might help others looking to do the same.

First, I started with understanding my energy consumption. I purchased a Shelly Plug S Gen3 to monitor the power usage of my appliances. It was a bit tricky at first, especially with setting up the time server, but once it was configured, it provided me with valuable insights. I learned which appliances were the biggest energy hogs and adjusted their usage accordingly.

Next, I integrated my smart lights with motion sensors. This was a game-changer! Now, lights only turn on when needed, and I’ve noticed a significant reduction in energy waste. Plus, it adds an extra layer of security when I’m away from home.

I also experimented with scheduling. Using Home Assistant, I set up routines to adjust my thermostat based on the outside temperature. For example, if it’s cold, my heating kicks in just in time for me to come home. This not only saves energy but also keeps my home comfortable year-round.

One thing I learned is the importance of regular maintenance. I make it a habit to check the firmware of my devices and update them whenever possible. This helps ensure everything runs smoothly and efficiently.

If I had to give advice to someone starting their smart home journey, it would be to take it one step at a time. Whether it’s monitoring energy usage, automating lights, or setting up smart thermostats, every small change contributes to a bigger impact.

I’m excited to see how much more I can do to make my home smarter and more efficient. If anyone has tips or experiences to share, I’d love to hear them!
