Alright, sharing this in case it saves someone else hours of head-scratching like it did for me.
So a few days ago, one of my Matter devices (a smart plug) just randomly decided to stop responding. It was paired with my Aqara M2 hub, everything had been working fine for weeks… then boom. Not responding in the Aqara app, not in Apple Home either.
At first I thought it was just a glitch. Restarted the device, rebooted the hub, reset Wi-Fi, the whole nine yards. Still no dice.
Turns out—brace yourself—it was all because of one simple thing: Thread instability.
My M2 was on Ethernet, but the Matter device was on Thread, and my Apple TV (which is my Thread Border Router) had some weird bug after a tvOS update. Basically, the Matter network fell apart and none of the Thread devices could talk anymore.
Fix? I unplugged the Apple TV for a full minute, plugged it back in, and let it sit for like 10 mins. Suddenly, all my “dead” devices came back to life like nothing ever happened.
Moral of the story? Sometimes it’s not your hub, not your plug, not even Aqara — it’s the Thread Border Router quietly causing chaos in the background.
Anyone else run into this kind of Matter weirdness? Would love to hear your go-to trouble-shoot tricks…
