Here is the complete, step-by-step guide.
Moving your Aqara setup to Matter allows for faster, local control and ensures your devices work simultaneously across Apple, Google, and Alexa without relying on cloud integrations.
Prerequisites
Before you start, ensure you have the following:
- A Matter-Compatible Aqara Hub: Hub M3, M2, M1S (Gen 1/2), E1, or Camera Hub G3.
- A “Matter Controller” for your target platform:
- For Google: Nest Hub (Gen 2/Max), Nest Wifi Pro.
- For Alexa: Echo (4th Gen), Echo Show 8 (Gen 3), Echo Hub.
- Latest Firmware: Your Aqara Hub must be on firmware version 4.0.0 or higher.
Step 1: Generate the Matter Pairing Code
You must do this inside the Aqara Home app first. - Open the Aqara Home app.
- Go to the Accessories tab and tap on your Hub (e.g., Hub M2).
- Tap the “…” (More Settings) icon in the top right corner.
- Look for Matter or Third-Party Matter Ecosystems.
- Tap Matter Pairing Code.
- A QR code and a numeric code will appear. Copy the numeric code to your clipboard (or screenshot the QR code).
Note: This code expires after 15 minutes. If it times out, simply generate a new one.
Step 2: Connect to Google Home
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap the Devices tab.
- Tap the + Add button (bottom right or top left).
- Select New device.
- Select Matter-enabled device.
- Scan the QR code from the Aqara app.
- If you only have the numeric code: Tap Set up without QR code and paste/enter the code manually.
- Follow the prompts to assign the hub to a room.
- Result: Your hub and its connected Zigbee sensors (Door, Motion, Temp, etc.) will appear in Google Home automatically.
Step 3: Connect to Amazon Alexa
- Result: Your hub and its connected Zigbee sensors (Door, Motion, Temp, etc.) will appear in Google Home automatically.
- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap the Devices tab (bottom menu).
- Tap the + icon (top right corner).
- Select Add Device.
- Scroll down to the bottom and select Other.
- Select Matter.
- Tap Scan QR Code and scan the code from the Aqara app.
- If you only have the numeric code: Tap Try Numeric Code Instead and enter it manually.
- Alexa will discover the device. Once added, your Aqara sensors will appear in your “All Devices” list.
Pro Tip: Using Google & Alexa Together (Multi-Admin)
If you want to control your home with BOTH Google and Alexa (or Apple Home + Google), do not remove the device to switch platforms. Instead, use “Multi-Admin”:
- Add the Hub to your primary app first (e.g., Google Home).
- Open the Hub’s settings inside Google Home.
- Tap Linked Matter apps & services.
- Tap Link apps & services to generate a new pairing code.
- Use this new code to add the device to Alexa.
Troubleshooting
If the pairing fails, check these common issues:
- Different Wi-Fi Networks: Your phone, your Aqara Hub, and your Matter Controller (e.g., Echo/Nest Hub) must be on the same Wi-Fi network (SSID) during the initial setup.
- IPv6 Disabled: Matter often requires IPv6 to be enabled on your main home router. Check your router settings.
- Bluetooth Permissions: Ensure the Google/Alexa app has permission to use Bluetooth on your phone, as it is used for the initial handshake.
- Code Timeout: If you generated the code 20 minutes ago, it is invalid. Go back to the Aqara app and generate a fresh code.
