How to Randomly Play Spotify Playlists with Alexa

Hey everyone! I’ve been really excited about integrating Spotify with Alexa to enhance my daily routine, especially in the mornings. I stumbled upon this feature and thought I’d share my experience in case anyone else is curious or facing similar challenges.

So, the goal was simple: have Alexa randomly play one of my Spotify playlists every morning. I love the idea of waking up to a surprise playlist, but I wasn’t sure how to set this up. After some research and experimentation, here’s what I discovered!

First, I realized that Alexa doesn’t natively support random playlist selection directly through voice commands. However, there’s a clever workaround using routines and the Spotify skill. Here’s how I did it:

  1. Set Up Spotify on Alexa: Make sure your Spotify account is linked with Alexa. This is straightforward through the Alexa app under the skills section.

  2. Create a Routine: Go to the Alexa app, navigate to the Routines section, and create a new one. I named mine “Morning Music Surprise” for clarity.

  3. Add the Spotify Action: In the routine, add an action to play music from Spotify. Here’s the trick: instead of selecting a specific playlist, choose the option to shuffle your library. This way, Alexa will randomly select a playlist from your collection each time.

  4. Set the Trigger: I set the trigger to activate at a specific time in the morning. You can also set it to activate with a voice command if you prefer manual control.

  5. Test It Out: Before relying on it completely, test the routine a few times to ensure it’s working as expected. I did this a couple of times and was thrilled when it started playing different playlists each day!

This setup has been a delightful addition to my mornings. It adds a fun element of surprise and keeps things fresh. I’d love to hear if anyone else has tried something similar or has additional tips to share!

Cheers to making our smart homes even smarter and more enjoyable! :notes:
