Hey everyone! I’ve been working on setting up my smart home, and I wanted to share a cool feature I just got working. I’ve been trying to figure out how to get Google Home to announce when a sensor or motion is detected. Specifically, I have a sensor on my garage door, and I wanted Google Home to say, “Garage door open” whenever it’s triggered. Let me walk you through how I did it!
First, I made sure my garage door sensor was properly connected to my smart home system. I use SmartThings, but I think this should work with other platforms too. The key was ensuring the sensor was correctly paired and sending signals to my hub.
Next, I went into the Google Home app on my phone. I navigated to the Automation section. From there, I selected the option to create a new automation. I chose the trigger as the garage door sensor opening. Then, I set the action to announce a message via Google Home. I kept it simple with the message, “Garage door open.”
After setting it up, I tested it by opening the garage door. To my delight, Google Home immediately announced the message! It’s such a handy feature, especially for keeping track of things when I’m not near the garage.
I also explored some additional settings. For instance, I can customize the message to be more specific, like, “Garage door has been opened. Please close it.” This adds a helpful reminder. Plus, I can choose which Google Home speaker should announce the message, perfect for different areas of the house.
This setup has been a game-changer for me. It’s a small automation, but it makes my smart home feel more connected and responsive. I hope this helps anyone else looking to add similar functionality to their setup!
If anyone has questions or tips on improving this automation, I’d love to hear them. Happy smart home tinkering! ![]()
