How to Set Up Morning Automation with Hue Lights

I recently decided to enhance my morning routine by automating my Hue lights to turn on gradually before sunrise. While I’ve been using Home Assistant for a while, setting up this automation was a bit tricky at first. Here’s how I made it work!

First, I wanted the lights to come on smoothly, not abruptly. I discovered that using the built-in sunrise automation in Home Assistant was a great start. However, I noticed that the brightness was too harsh initially. To fix this, I adjusted the settings to gradually increase the brightness over 15 minutes. This made the transition much more pleasant and natural.

I also wanted the lights to dim slightly if there was no motion detected after a certain period. I set up a motion sensor in the hallway and linked it to the lights. Now, if I’m still in bed and there’s no movement, the lights dim to a lower brightness, saving energy without disturbing my sleep.

One thing I struggled with was ensuring the automation worked seamlessly across different rooms. I found that grouping my Hue lights by area (like the bedroom and living room) made it easier to control them separately. Each group has its own automation rules, which gives me more flexibility.

I’d love to hear how others have set up their morning routines. Have you tried integrating other devices like coffee makers or smart speakers? Let me know your tips and tricks!

Overall, this project has made my mornings much more enjoyable and efficient. It’s amazing how a little automation can make such a big difference!
