How to Set Up Sunset to Sunrise Lighting Automation

I recently decided to enhance my outdoor lighting setup by automating it to turn on at sunset and off at sunrise. This seemed like a straightforward task, but I quickly realized it involved more steps than I initially thought. I wanted to share my journey and hopefully help others who might be tackling a similar project.First, I needed to understand how to integrate my Z-Wave and Hue devices into a single automation. I found that grouping them under a unified rule was key to ensuring they all responded simultaneously. I used the Rule Machine in Hubitat to create a rule that triggers at sunset and sunrise. The setup involved defining the triggers, setting the conditions, and specifying the actions clearly. I learned that the Rule Machine checks triggers only at the specified times, so if the lights were accidentally left on, they wouldn’t turn off until the next sunrise. One challenge I faced was ensuring all devices received the command without delay. I discovered that sending the command to the group as a whole was more efficient than addressing each device individually. This approach not only simplified the rule but also reduced the chance of any device being left out. After setting everything up, I tested the automation over a week to ensure reliability. It worked seamlessly, and I was delighted to see my garden illuminated beautifully every evening. This project not only improved my home’s curb appeal but also gave me confidence in tackling more complex automations in the future. If anyone has tips or alternative methods for achieving similar results, I’d love to hear them! Happy automating!
