How to Use Unused Switches to Control Smart Bulbs

Hey everyone, I came across a really cool solution to a problem I was having with my smart home setup, and I wanted to share it with you all. I live in a house with a lot of old-school switches, and while most of them work perfectly with my smart devices, there’s always that one switch that seems to do absolutely nothing. I stumbled upon this issue when I was trying to control a smart bulb in my basement using a switch that had been unused for years.

I decided to do some research and found out that with the right hardware, I could repurpose these unused switches to control my smart devices. After some trial and error, I discovered that using a Shelly 1 PM Mini was the perfect solution for my setup. This little device allows me to control my smart bulb without any issues, even though the switch itself isn’t directly connected to the bulb.

Here’s how I did it:

  1. Identify the Switch: I started by locating the unused switch in my basement. It was a standard two-way switch, and I knew it wasn’t connected to anything important.
  2. Install the Shelly Device: I connected the Shelly 1 PM Mini to the switch. This involved a bit of wiring, but the instructions provided by Shelly made it surprisingly easy.
  3. Configure the Smart Bulb: Once the Shelly device was set up, I configured it to control my smart bulb. This involved setting up a simple automation in my smart home app to turn the bulb on or off when the switch was toggled.
  4. Test the Setup: I tested the setup by toggling the switch, and to my delight, the smart bulb responded perfectly. It was like having a brand-new smart switch installed in my home!

This solution has been a lifesaver for me, and I can’t recommend it enough to anyone looking to repurpose old switches in their home. It’s a great way to save money and reduce waste while enhancing your smart home experience.

If anyone has any questions or wants to share their own experiences with repurposing unused switches, I’d love to hear from you! Let’s keep the smart home innovation going!
