Hubitat + Water Sensor + Zigbee Water Valve Saved My Basement from Flooding

As a homeowner, I’ve always been cautious about potential water damage, especially after purchasing an older home with an aging water heater. I decided to take proactive measures by installing water sensors under every water outlet in my house, paired with a budget-friendly Zigbee water valve from AliExpress. The valve was connected to a ball valve installed by a plumber, ensuring a quick response in case of leaks.

Last week, my vigilance paid off. I received a push notification from the Hubitat Safety Monitor at 3 AM, alerting me to water detected under my water heater. I rushed to the property, 170 miles away, to find a few gallons of water on the floor. The issue was traced to a rusted pressure valve that had failed, causing the water heater to overflow. Fortunately, thanks to the water sensor and automated valve, the damage was minimal and contained.

This experience underscored the importance of smart home solutions in preventing potential disasters. The integration of water sensors, automated valves, and a reliable monitoring system like Hubitat not only saved my basement but also provided peace of mind. I’m now exploring additional smart home integrations, including a Hubitat-compatible electric water heater control, to further enhance my home’s safety.

I’m truly grateful for the Hubitat community and its innovative solutions. If anyone has tips or experiences to share regarding water management or automation, I’d love to hear them! Let’s continue to inspire each other and make our homes safer and smarter together.
