I would not recommend the G4 doorbell!

Although I think this is a brilliant device, I live on a busy road and the lingering recordings are going off every few seconds. Please Aqara can we have a detection region like my G2H Pro? Then it would be truly great.

@cwmparc It sounds like you’re experiencing some challenges with the Smart Video Doorbell G4, especially given your location on a busy road. While the G4 doesn’t currently offer a feature to define a specific detection region like the G2H Pro, there are a few settings you can adjust to help manage the frequent triggers:

  1. Lingering Duration Adjustment: You might want to lower the lingering duration settings to reduce the frequency of recordings. This can help to filter out brief passers-by.

  2. Detection Sensitivity: Adjusting the detection sensitivity can also help to minimize unnecessary alerts.

  3. Operating Mode: Consider switching to power-saving mode, which might reduce wake-ups from the usual activity on a busy street.

Your feedback about the desire for a detection region feature is valuable, and hopefully, it will inspire future updates or enhancements. Meanwhile, if the issue persists, engaging with the Aqara community for additional tips or workarounds might be beneficial. Thank you for sharing your experience and helping to improve the product!

I’m sorry for the poor user experience of the G4 doorbell, my friend. Due to its PIR sensing sensor, you can’t actually adjust its detection distance. Our upcoming new doorbell already uses radar detection, and you can adjust its detection distance within a range of 1-5 meters. I think the new product can solve your current usage problem. The old G4 doorbell can be replaced with other door that are not close to the road.

Many thanks for your reply, however, it’s not the distance that’s the problem. I mean a detection region that allows you to block say the top half of the camera from detecting road traffic but allowing anyone approaching the door to set off the recording. It works brilliantly on the G2H Pro. BTW I love Aqara and will always prefer it when I can.

Also it’s a hacky DIY solution, but how about masking part of the PIR sensor?

I have a different issue where my doorbell missed 80% of any motion.

Yes, regarding this issue, I can explain the reason in detail again:
The detection area of the PIR sensor is determined by the Fresnel lens configured in front of it (just like a camera requires an optical lens in addition to the image sensor). The Fresnel lens is usually designed to have a relatively fixed detection angle to ensure the maximum detection range, and users cannot change it (because it is a plastic structural component that cannot be modified once formed). The G4 doorbell is a low-power camera (because it has a battery powered mode, it has a sleep state, while the G2H Pro never sleeps). The main way to wake it up is to detect someone approaching through the PIR sensor, so it cannot filter out detection by pre configuring the image area like other cameras that are always powered on.

The new doorbell is based on radar detection of targets, which has very high sensitivity and is not affected by changes in ambient temperature. However, the detection parameters need to be configured reasonably according to the installation environment to avoid recording too many useless door events, which may cause a shorter battery life.

Hi @cwmparc welcome to the community.
I’ve got the G4 and I don’t seem to be having this issue.
Have you changed the detection frequency to see if this improves ?

Wouldn’t that mask off the camera too?

I have mine hardwired, but surely it is a software issue. Other make can offer the chose the area to detect and it seems like a software solution in the G2pro?

But that will surely miss lingerers that I may want to see? If I can block of a strip across the middle where the car roofs can be seen over my wall but it would catch anyone walking up to the front door.

Hello friend, G2H Pro uses image vision to determine if there are moving objects in the video, while G4 doorbell uses a PIR sensor (non visual) to wake up, so G2H Pro can configure the detection area, while G4’s detection area is completely determined by a pre designed Fresnel lens, and it cannot configure the detection area. This is a physical hardware difference, and I believe other cameras that use PIR detection area cannot be configured by the user.

Many thanks everyone for your help.

!!! Where do I find these settings in the app? !!!

My previous experience with Ring was so so much better!

If this more expensive device can’t be modified as described by your AI bot, then I’ll be getting a refund tomorrow.

@gio_volo I understand your frustration, and I’m here to help. You can find the settings for your Smart Video Doorbell G4 in the Aqara Home app. Here’s how:

  1. Adjust Lingering Duration and Detection Sensitivity: Go to the device settings in the app, navigate to “Detection Settings,” and you will find options to adjust the lingering duration and detection sensitivity.

  2. Switching Operating Mode: In the same “Detection Settings” menu, you can switch the operating mode to “Power-Saving Mode” to help reduce unnecessary alerts.

These adjustments might help you better manage the frequent triggers you’re experiencing. If you continue to face issues, I encourage you to engage with the Aqara community for additional insights and support. Your feedback is important, and it helps in shaping future product improvements. Thank you for reaching out!
