Inovelli Gen 2 Switch Installation Experience

Hello everyone, I thought I’d share my experience installing the Inovelli Gen 2 switches. As a complete newbie, I was a bit nervous about tackling this project, but it turned out to be much more manageable than I expected! :rocket:

First off, I wanted to upgrade my traditional switches to something smarter without having to rewire everything. The Inovelli Gen 2 seemed like a great option since it allows you to keep your existing wiring intact in one of the boxes. That was a huge relief because I wasn’t looking forward to messing with complicated rewiring! :wrench:

Here’s a quick rundown of my process:

  1. Identify the ‘Hot’ Box: I used a multimeter to determine which box was connected to the electrical panel. This was crucial because it told me where the power was coming from. Safety first, right? :zap:

  2. Installation Options: Once I knew which box was hot, I had two choices:

    • Install the smart switch in the hot box and keep the other switch as a dumb switch. This was my preferred option because it saved me money and time.
    • Alternatively, I could have installed the smart switch in the non-hot box and used an add-on switch in the hot box. This might be useful if the hot box is in an inconvenient location, but I didn’t need that in my case. :hammer_and_wrench:
  3. Wiring Considerations: I also checked if my setup required a neutral wire. Luckily, my wiring already had one, so I didn’t have to make any adjustments there. Always good to double-check before diving in! :bulb:

  4. Testing and Setup: After installation, I used the Hubitat app to discover the new switch. It was smooth sailing from there—I set up my routines, and everything worked like a charm! :tada:

One thing I learned is that the type of switch you end up with depends on whether you use a dumb switch or an add-on switch. For example, using a dumb switch means the switch type will be “3-way Toggle,” while an add-on switch will make it “3-way Momentary.” This was something I had to keep in mind during setup, but it wasn’t too complicated once I understood the basics. :memo:

Overall, I’m really happy with how this turned out. It’s amazing how much smarter my home feels with these switches. If you’re thinking about making the switch (no pun intended), I’d say go for it! Just take your time, double-check everything, and don’t hesitate to look up tutorials if you get stuck. You’ve got this! :muscle:

Happy smart switching! :rocket:
