I’ve been on a journey to integrate my August Smart Lock Pro with both my Abode security system and Home Assistant, and I wanted to share my experience in case it helps anyone else looking to do something similar. Spoiler alert: It works beautifully, but there’s a bit of setup involved!
First, I’ll start by saying that I’ve always been a fan of August locks for their sleek design and reliability. Pairing it with Abode was a no-brainer since I already rely on Abode for my home security. The challenge came in wanting to also integrate it with Home Assistant for local control via HomeKit. I knew it would be a bit of a puzzle, but I was determined to crack it.
Here’s what I did:
-
Abode Integration: I started by pairing the August lock with my Abode Iota system over Z-Wave. This was straightforward using the Abode app. The lock showed up immediately, and I could arm/disarm my system as usual. The best part? It all works seamlessly without any additional configuration.
-
Home Assistant Setup: Next came the Home Assistant part. I knew I needed to use the HomeKit Controller integration to get local control. After some research, I found that the August Smart Lock Pro does indeed communicate over Bluetooth with HomeKit. The key was ensuring that the HomeKit Controller was properly configured in Home Assistant.
-
The Magic Happens: Once everything was set up, I could control the lock both through Abode and Home Assistant. It’s amazing how both systems coexist without interfering with each other. I can arm my Abode system normally, and still have full control of the lock via Home Assistant.
A few tips for anyone attempting this:
- Make sure your August lock is fully updated before starting.
- Double-check your Z-Wave and Bluetooth connections.
- Take it one step at a time – there’s no need to rush.
I’m thrilled with how everything came together. It’s the best of both worlds – the security of Abode and the convenience of Home Assistant, all while keeping my August lock fully functional. If you’re looking to do something similar, give it a shot – you won’t regret it!
