Integrating HomeMatic Across Multiple Locations with Alexa

Hey everyone, I’m really excited to share my journey of setting up HomeMatic components across three different locations: my apartment, my parents’ house, and my girlfriend’s place. Each location has its own setup—some without a CCU, one with a CCU2, and another with HomeMatic IP. The goal was to manage everything seamlessly from a single iPad interface without getting into complex setups like Raspberry Pi. Plus, I wanted to integrate Alexa for voice control, especially with the Osram Smart+ light components already in place.

Initially, I thought about using Mediohoma (v5 plus) for each location, but I wasn’t sure if that was the only option. I explored the possibility of using a unified tool that could handle all three setups. After some research, I found that integrating Alexa with HomeMatic was more straightforward than I anticipated, especially with the help of SmartThings and the MyEcobee device. This combination allowed me to create a ‘follow me’ feature, where lights adjust based on my presence, and even provided energy-saving tips. It was a bit of a learning curve, but the end result was worth it!

One challenge I faced was ensuring compatibility across all devices, especially since each location had a different setup. I discovered that checking compatibility through the ecobee website was super helpful. It turned out that over 90% of my HVAC configurations were compatible, which was a huge relief. I also found some great resources on GitHub that provided additional smart apps to enhance functionality.

For those interested in setting up something similar, I’d recommend starting with the ecobee thermostat as a central hub. Pairing it with SmartThings opens up a lot of possibilities, and the MyEcobee device really ties everything together. If you’re on a budget, the ecobee lite is a fantastic option too. Just make sure to check for local rebates, as they can significantly reduce the cost.

Overall, this project has been a fantastic way to streamline my smart home setup across multiple locations. It’s amazing how much you can achieve with the right mix of hardware and smart integrations. If anyone has questions or needs advice on similar setups, feel free to reach out—I’d be happy to help!
