Integrating IR Control for Washlet in Home Assistant

Hey everyone, I’m excited to share my recent project integrating my washlet toilet into Home Assistant using IR control! While I’m relatively new to the world of IR and smart home automation, I’ve managed to get things working smoothly, and I’d love to walk you through my journey and some tips I’ve picked up along the way.

The Setup
I have a washlet toilet with an IR remote, and my goal was to integrate it into my Home Assistant setup, primarily to toggle the light. After some research, I decided to use an IR transmitter and receiver setup. The transmitter would be placed near the toilet to send IR signals, while the receiver would be connected to my Home Assistant setup to communicate with the transmitter.

Challenges and Solutions
One of the initial challenges was figuring out the right devices to use. I came across several options, but the Broadlink RM4 Mini stood out because it’s compact, supports IR, and integrates well with Home Assistant. I paired it with an IR receiver module to ensure reliable communication.

Another hurdle was configuring the IR signals. I found that using the Broadlink Hub integration in Home Assistant made this process much easier. The app allowed me to capture the IR signals from my washlet’s remote and map them to specific actions in Home Assistant. This way, I could create custom scenes or automations, like turning the light on when the toilet seat is lifted or setting a timer for the warm water feature.

Tips for Others
If you’re looking to integrate an IR-controlled device into your smart home, here are a few tips:

  • Test Your Setup: Before fully committing, test each component individually to ensure they’re working as expected.
  • Use Reliable Software: Tools like the Broadlink Hub app can simplify the process of capturing and mapping IR signals.
  • Consider Automation: Once everything is set up, think about how you can automate tasks to make your life even easier. For example, you could set the light to turn on automatically when the bathroom is occupied.

Final Thoughts
This project has been a fantastic learning experience, and I’m thrilled with how seamless the integration turned out. The ability to control my washlet toilet through Home Assistant has added a new level of convenience to my daily routine. If you’re considering a similar setup, I highly recommend exploring IR solutions—they might just be the key to unlocking a smarter home!
