Integrating Lutron Caséta with Home Assistant: A Success Story

I’ve been on a journey to integrate my Lutron Caséta Fan Control with Home Assistant, and I’m thrilled to share my experience! :star2:

The Challenge:
I replaced an old AC motor fan with a modern DC motor fan that has its own smart control. While HA can control the DC fan directly, the Lutron Caséta Fan Control couldn’t keep up. The issue? The wall switch would disconnect the fan from HA’s control entirely, making it impossible to use the fan’s remote or HA to adjust settings.

The Solution:
I decided to bypass the fan’s load wire and hardwire it to the hot, ensuring the fan is always powered. Then, I set up HA to intercept button presses from the Lutron switch and translate them into codes for the DC fan’s smart controller. :rocket:

The Process:

  1. Hardware Setup: I disconnected the load wire from the Lutron switch and rewired it to stay powered continuously. This was a bit tricky, but with some research and patience, it came together smoothly.
  2. HA Configuration: I configured HA to listen for button presses on the Lutron switch. This involved setting up triggers in HA’s automation system. Initially, I faced some hurdles because the button presses weren’t being detected, but after some tweaking, everything aligned perfectly. :hammer_and_wrench:
  3. Testing: I tested each button press to ensure HA responded correctly. It was a relief to see the fan adjust its speed and direction as intended! :tada:

The Outcome:
Now, my Lutron Caséta Fan Control works seamlessly with HA. I can adjust the fan from the wall switch, and HA continues to manage the fan’s smart features without any issues. This setup has made my space smarter and more convenient. :house_with_garden::sparkles:

Tips for Others:

  • Research First: Understand your hardware limitations and how they interact with your smart devices.
  • Start Small: Test each part of your setup incrementally to identify and fix issues early.
  • Leverage Community Resources: Forums like this are invaluable. Don’t hesitate to ask for help or share your progress! :speech_balloon:
