I’ve been on a journey to create a seamless smart home ecosystem using various devices and platforms, and I’d love to share my experiences and tips with the community!
Starting with Echo devices, I’ve found them to be fantastic for voice control and integration with other smart home systems. However, I ran into an issue with my Yolax smart shades not transferring over when I upgraded from an Echo Gen 1 to a Gen 4. After some research, I discovered that the shades were pinned to the older Echo, and there wasn’t a straightforward way to switch them. I ended up leaving the Gen 1 plugged in temporarily, but I’m planning to fully migrate once I resolve the Wi-Fi segmentation issues.
On the topic of cameras and doorbells, I’ve been experimenting with Blink and Wyze products. While Blink cameras integrate well with Alexa, I’ve encountered some quirks with local recording. Initially, I had trouble getting clips to save, but after deleting my account and reconfiguring with local storage, it started working for motion events. However, I’m still puzzled why it doesn’t record motion consistently. If anyone has insights, I’d appreciate the help!
For zigbee devices, I’ve been impressed with the flexibility of the Aqara M3 Hub. It’s been great for expanding my zigbee network, but I’m still figuring out how to integrate third-party zigbee sensors without relying on the Hue ecosystem. If anyone has tips on this, I’d love to hear them!
Lastly, I’ve been experimenting with openHAB for more advanced automation. It’s powerful but has a steep learning curve. I recently set up a rule to turn on outdoor lights when motion is detected, but I’m curious if there’s a way to make the timing configurable without relying on cron expressions. Any suggestions would be welcome!
Overall, while there are challenges, the satisfaction of creating a personalized smart home setup is incredibly rewarding. I’m excited to continue exploring and learning from the community. Happy automating everyone!
