Hi everyone, I wanted to share my recent experience integrating my Nuki smart lock with a Shelly thermostat. It’s been a fantastic journey, and I’m thrilled with how everything works together now. Let me walk you through the process and some tips I picked up along the way.
First, I purchased the Nuki smart lock with the intention of enhancing my home security. The setup was straightforward, and the integration with my existing smart home ecosystem was seamless. However, I wanted to take it a step further by connecting it with my Shelly thermostat to create a more personalized experience.
The goal was to have the thermostat adjust the temperature based on whether the door was locked or unlocked. This way, when I leave the house, the thermostat automatically switches to an energy-saving mode, and when I return, it warms up the house to my preferred temperature. It sounds simple, but setting it up required a bit of research and experimentation.
I started by checking the compatibility of both devices with my smart home platform. Luckily, both Nuki and Shelly are well-supported, which made the integration much easier. I used Node-RED as my automation tool of choice, which allowed me to create a custom flow that listens for lock/unlock events from the Nuki and triggers the corresponding temperature adjustments on the Shelly.
One challenge I faced was ensuring that the automation was reliable. I had to tweak the timing and conditions a few times to make sure that the thermostat didn’t overreact to quick lock/unlock actions. For example, if I unlock the door briefly to let in a delivery, I didn’t want the thermostat to start heating the entire house. Setting a delay and using presence sensors helped mitigate this issue.
Another thing I discovered was the importance of firmware updates. Both devices had recent updates that improved their compatibility and performance. I highly recommend checking for updates regularly to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Overall, the integration has been a huge success. It’s added a new layer of convenience to my smart home, and I love how everything works together seamlessly. If you’re considering similar integrations, my advice is to start small, test each component thoroughly, and gradually build up your system. It’s a rewarding process, and the end result is well worth the effort!
