Integrating Smart Home Technology into a New House Build

As I embark on designing my new home, I’m excited about the possibilities of integrating smart home technology seamlessly into the architecture. The goal is to create a system that feels intuitive, discreet, and future-proof. Here are some of my thoughts and questions as I plan this out:

Motion Sensors and Lighting Automation
I’m considering installing PIR sensors in every room to automate lighting. The challenge is determining the optimal placement—ceiling-mounted for broader coverage or ankle-height for more localized triggering. I’d love to hear how others have balanced these options to ensure reliability without compromising aesthetics.

Power Supply Planning
Each sensor requires a DC power source, so I’m thinking about provisions for USB supplies or GPOs in wall cavities. This would allow for a clean installation while ensuring all nodes have consistent power. Are there any best practices for wiring these in a way that’s both accessible and unobtrusive?

Lighting Control
Z-Wave wireless dimmers seem like a solid choice for internal lighting. However, I’m curious if there’s a more permanent solution that still allows manual control in case the smart home system goes down. Sonoff devices are an option, but I want something that feels more integrated and less like an afterthought.

Security Integration
Pre-wiring security cameras back to a central location is on my list. I’m also exploring Blue Iris for alerting and notifications. Does anyone have experience with this setup and any tips for ensuring smooth operation?

Window and Door Automation
Running drawwires into window frames for automated blinds and door frames for sensors is another area I’m exploring. It would be great to hear from those who’ve implemented similar solutions and how they handled the integration with existing systems.

IR Integration
Discreet IR flooders in every room are a consideration for controlling legacy devices. How have others approached this to ensure coverage without visible hardware?

I’m eager to hear from the community—what have you incorporated into your smart home builds that you’d recommend? Any lessons learned or innovative solutions would be invaluable as I move forward with this project. Let’s collaborate to create a smart home that’s as functional as it is elegant!
