Integrating Smart Lighting with Presence Detection: A Newbie's Journey

Hey everyone, I’m thrilled to share my recent experience with Smartthings and home automation. As a newcomer, I’ve been exploring how to create a seamless smart home environment, and I must say, it’s been an exciting yet challenging journey.

One of my primary goals was to set up an automation that turns on my living room lights when I return home, but only during the Sunset to Sunrise timeframe. The idea was to have the lights greet me in the evening but not during the day when I might come home for lunch or a quick break.

I started by using the Smart Lighting app, which seemed like the perfect tool for the job. I followed the setup guide, selecting my lights and setting the trigger to my presence. However, I quickly noticed something wasn’t quite right. The lights would turn on every time I got home, regardless of the time of day. It was frustrating because I wanted the automation to be smarter and more context-aware.

Determined to solve this, I decided to delete the existing automation and start fresh. I recreated the rule, carefully selecting the time constraint option and ensuring the Sunset to Sunrise timeframe was correctly set. But alas, the same issue persisted. The lights remained oblivious to the time of day, turning on whenever I walked through the door.

I then explored the possibility of using a custom application to have more control over the automation. I spent hours researching forums and guides, trying different approaches and tweaking settings. While I managed to create a more customized rule, the time constraint issue still lingered. It was perplexing—why wasn’t the time-based condition working as intended?

After several days of trial and error, I realized that the problem might not be with the automation itself but with how the presence detection was being triggered. I decided to test the automation without the time constraint to isolate the issue. Sure enough, the lights turned on reliably when I got home, but the time-based condition was still not functioning correctly.

This experience taught me the importance of thoroughly understanding each component of an automation. While I haven’t fully resolved the time constraint issue yet, I’m more confident now in troubleshooting and customizing my smart home setup. I’m looking forward to continuing my journey and discovering more ways to enhance my home automation experience.

If anyone has insights or tips on setting up time-based automations, I’d love to hear them! Happy automating everyone! :star2:
