Integrating SmartThings, Echo, and Harmony Hub for Voice-Controlled TV

Hi everyone! I wanted to share my experience setting up a voice-controlled TV system using SmartThings, Echo, and the Harmony Hub. I’ve been wanting to get this working for a while, and I finally figured it out. Hopefully, this helps someone else out there!

The Goal

I wanted to be able to control my TV, set-top box, receiver, and even some lights with my voice using Alexa. I also wanted to avoid using IFTTT if possible, as I’m a bit privacy-conscious.

The Setup

I started by researching compatibility between the devices. I found that the new Samsung SmartThings hub is compatible with both Echo and the Logitech Harmony Hub. This was a game-changer because it meant I could link everything together without needing IFTTT.

Step 1: Setting Up Activities in Harmony Hub

I created activities in the Harmony Hub software for each channel I wanted to control. For example, I made an activity for HGTV, Syfy, BBC, and CNN. Each activity includes turning on the TV, setting the input, turning on the receiver, and setting the channel. I also added commands to change the channel and adjust the volume.

Step 2: Integrating with SmartThings

I added the Harmony Hub as a new entertainment device in the SmartThings app. After entering my Harmony credentials, SmartThings imported the activities as devices. I renamed them to make them more user-friendly (e.g., “HGTV” instead of “HGTV [Harmony Activity]”).

Step 3: Linking with Alexa

I linked my SmartThings hub to Alexa through the Alexa app. Now, I can say things like, “Alexa, turn on HGTV” or “Alexa, turn off the TV.” It’s amazing how seamless this is!

A Fun Bonus

I also wanted to change the color of my Philips Hue Bloom lights depending on the channel. I added commands in the Harmony activities to control the Hue lights. Now, Syfy has a cool blue tone, and HGTV has a warm orange tone. It’s a small touch, but it makes watching TV feel more immersive.

Challenges and Workarounds

One thing I noticed is that sometimes Alexa says, “That device doesn’t support that activity” when I turn the TV off, even though it works fine. I’m not sure why this happens, but it’s a minor issue. I also had to adjust the power settings in the Harmony Hub to make sure the set-top box stays on when I change channels.

Final Thoughts

This setup has been a huge success for me. I love being able to control everything with my voice, and the integration between SmartThings, Echo, and Harmony Hub has been flawless. If you’re looking to simplify your home theater setup, I highly recommend this approach!

Let me know if you have any questions or if you’ve found other cool ways to integrate these devices. Happy automating! :video_game::tv:
