I recently installed a SunTouch 500850 thermostat in my home and wanted to share my experience integrating it with SmartThings. The process was quite smooth, though I encountered a few challenges that I thought others might find useful to know about.
Installation and Setup
First, I connected the thermostat to my existing wiring. The thermostat comes with integrated GFCI protection, which was a nice touch and eliminated the need for an external GFI. I also installed an additional electrical box nearby to accommodate any future SmartThings devices I might add.
Integration with SmartThings
One of the key features I was excited about was the ability to control the thermostat via SmartThings. The thermostat has a Home Automation terminal that allows for remote control. After some research, I learned that applying a short or 24 VAC between the Home Automation and COM terminals switches the thermostat between ‘Away’ and regular operation.
I decided to use a Z-Wave device to handle this automation. Installing a Z-Wave repeater nearby ensured reliable communication, even though my bathroom is quite far from the main hub. This setup allows me to remotely start the floor heating hours before guests arrive, which is incredibly convenient.
Challenges and Solutions
Initially, I was a bit confused about whether the terminals needed a momentary contact or a sustained connection. After consulting the manual and some online forums, I realized that a momentary connection was sufficient to trigger the Away mode. This was a relief as it simplified the wiring process.
Tips for Others
If you’re planning to integrate a similar thermostat, here are a few tips:
- Plan Ahead: Install extra wiring and boxes to accommodate future SmartThings devices.
- Use Z-Wave or Zigbee: These protocols offer reliable communication, especially in areas with limited Wi-Fi coverage.
- Momentary Connections: For the Home Automation terminal, a brief connection is enough to switch modes.
Overall, this integration has been a fantastic addition to my smart home setup. It not only enhances comfort but also adds a layer of convenience that I truly appreciate. I hope my experience helps others looking to integrate their thermostats with SmartThings!
