Integrating Tapo C520WS with Home Assistant: A Smooth Experience

Hey everyone,

I’ve been diving into the world of smart home integration lately, and I wanted to share my experience with the Tapo C520WS camera. It’s been a journey of learning and tweaking, and I’m thrilled to see how everything comes together!

First off, I installed the Tapo C520WS to keep an eye on my backyard. The setup was straightforward with the TP-Link integration in Home Assistant. But I soon realized I wanted more control over how my videos were stored. My Mini PC had some free space, so I wondered if I could bypass the SD card and store videos directly in HA. After some research and tweaking, I managed to set it up! Now, my wife can easily access the videos without needing another app—huge win!

Another feature I was excited about was manual recording. I used to rely on the Blink app for this, but with Tapo, it took some figuring out. I discovered that while the camera’s motion detection is always on, recording outside the scheduled times wasn’t straightforward. With a bit of HA automation, I cracked it! Now, I can trigger recordings manually, which is perfect for those spontaneous moments.

I also explored switching from the TP-Link integration to Tapo Camera Control from HACS. It offered more customization options, which I appreciated. The community support was amazing—everyone was so helpful and patient with my questions.

This journey taught me the importance of exploring different integrations and not being afraid to tweak settings. It’s all about finding what works best for your setup. I’m now looking forward to integrating more devices and seeing how they can enhance my smart home experience.

Cheers to the community for all the guidance and support! :raised_hands:

Best,
