Integrating Wink and SmartThings for Seamless Automation

I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation, and I must say, it’s been an exciting journey! However, I’ve hit a bit of a snag that I’m hoping the community can help me with. Let me share my situation and the solution I’ve been brainstorming.

The Setup: I’ve been using both Wink and SmartThings for different parts of my home automation setup. The reason? My Chamberlain garage door opener doesn’t work seamlessly with SmartThings, and my custom air exchanger requires the temperature differential functionality that Wink simply doesn’t support. So, I’ve been juggling both platforms to make everything work as intended.

The Challenge: Here’s where things get tricky. I need events to trigger between Wink and SmartThings hubs based on the same device. For instance, when my garage door opens or closes, I want an event to fire on the SmartThings hub, and vice versa. This is crucial for a specific automation I’m working on, but I’ve yet to find a straightforward solution.

My Idea: After some research and brainstorming, I came up with an idea involving Z-Wave 3-way switches. The plan is to connect one switch to Wink and the other to SmartThings, wiring them together. The theory is that toggling one switch would trigger an event on the opposite hub, creating a bridge between the two systems. While I’m hopeful, I’m not entirely sure how Z-Wave 3-way switches behave in this setup, so I’m reaching out to see if this approach makes sense or if there’s a better way.

Why It Matters: This integration is important to me because it would streamline my automation processes, eliminating the need for workarounds and ensuring everything operates smoothly. I’m willing to invest in the necessary hardware, even if it means tucking the switches away unused, as long as it solves the problem.

Questions for the Community:

  • Has anyone successfully used Z-Wave 3-way switches to bridge two different hubs?
  • Are there alternative methods to achieve this kind of event triggering between Wink and SmartThings?
  • Any potential pitfalls or considerations I should be aware of before diving in?

I’d love to hear your thoughts, experiences, and any suggestions you might have. Let’s collaborate to find a solution that makes this integration a reality!

Thanks in advance for your insights and help!
