Integrating Xiaomi Aqara Sensors with OpenHAB: Seeking the Best Approach

Hey everyone, I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation, and I’m currently exploring how to integrate some affordable Xiaomi Aqara Temperature and Humidity sensors into my OpenHAB setup. I came across these sensors priced around $8 each, which is super appealing, but I want to make sure I set them up correctly to avoid any issues down the line.

Previously, I tried using NodeMCU and DHT22 sensors, but the battery life was dismal—only about a week with 4 AA batteries. That’s not feasible for my needs, so I’m really hoping the Xiaomi sensors will offer better performance.

From what I’ve gathered, I need a gateway that uses the ZigBee standard to communicate with these sensors. I already have a Philips Hue Bridge in my setup, and I’m wondering if that can serve as the gateway. That would be ideal because it would eliminate the need for another device or gateway that relies on the internet.

I’m also curious about the best way to get the sensor data into OpenHAB. Options I’ve heard about include MQTT or using a designated binding. I’d prefer to avoid introducing another gateway that depends on the internet, so I’m leaning toward MQTT or the ZigBee binding if it’s compatible with my Hue Bridge.

Has anyone successfully integrated Xiaomi Aqara sensors with OpenHAB using their Hue Bridge? What kind of battery life have you experienced with these sensors? Any tips or tricks you’d recommend to ensure a smooth setup? I’d love to hear your experiences and advice!

Thanks in advance for your insights, and I look forward to learning from the community!
