Hello fellow smart home enthusiasts! I recently found myself in a situation where I wanted to integrate my Z-Wave devices with Alexa, and I thought I’d share my experience and some tips that might help others in a similar boat.
A few months ago, I purchased a home that came with a Z-Wave hub and a few devices—specifically, a garage door opener, a doorbell camera, and a porch light. Initially, everything was set up with Alarm.com, which required a subscription. However, after the subscription period ended, I realized I didn’t want to continue paying for it, especially since I only had three devices connected.
I wanted to switch to controlling these devices through Alexa, which I already use extensively for other smart home functions. The challenge was figuring out how to do this without the Alarm.com app, as Alexa didn’t natively support controlling these Z-Wave devices through voice commands.
After some research and experimentation, I discovered that the Alarm.com skill for Alexa was the key. Even though the Alarm.com app itself wasn’t free, the skill allowed me to control my devices through voice commands without needing the app. I could say, for example, “Alexa, tell Alarm.com to close my garage door,” and it worked perfectly. This was a game-changer for me because it meant I could keep using my Z-Wave devices without the added cost of the subscription.
One thing I noticed was that while the Alarm.com skill worked flawlessly for voice commands, the Alexa app itself didn’t have a dedicated button for these devices. However, I found that using the skill through voice was just as convenient and saved me from having to switch apps or devices.
This experience taught me the importance of exploring third-party integrations and skills within Alexa. Sometimes, the solution isn’t immediately obvious, but with a bit of digging, you can find creative ways to make your devices work seamlessly within your existing ecosystem.
If anyone else is looking to integrate Z-Wave devices with Alexa and isn’t sure where to start, I’d highly recommend checking out the Alarm.com skill. It’s been a lifesaver for me, and I hope it can help others too!
Cheers to smarter homes and smarter living! ![]()
