M3 Hub Thread Spec Version?

Does anyone know which Thread Spec version is the Aqara M3 hub utilizing? My hope is that they are running Thread 1.4 or plan to make that update.

@jklopez1989 The Aqara Hub M3 currently supports Thread, as indicated by its wireless protocol compatibility, but specific details about the Thread Spec version, such as whether it utilizes Thread 1.4, are not provided in the available reference information. I recommend checking for firmware updates regularly, as Aqara may implement upgrades over time. For the most precise information, reaching out to Aqara’s Customer Service might be beneficial. They can provide the most up-to-date details and potential development plans.

@jklopez1989 The latest online firmware version (4.3.6) for the M3 Hub has already adopted Matter SDK 1.4 and Thread version 10.

Thanks for your interest in the Aqara Hub M3 and for bringing up the Thread spec version!

Currently, the M3 Hub supports Thread 1.3, which already includes many key improvements such as enhanced backbone connectivity, and better interoperability with multi-border router networks. We’re aware of the new features introduced in Thread 1.4, and our team is actively evaluating that version as part of our future update roadmap.

We truly appreciate your feedback—it helps us prioritize what matters most to our users.

hi! kindly ask why you need Thread 1.4? any update on this version?

I recently tested three different Thread Border Routers: Apple TV, Eero 7 Router, and Aqara M3 Hub. All three successfully commissioned devices into my preferred smart home platform. However, each device unfortunately created its own independent Thread network.

The Eero 7 Router had one advantage: a feature called Keychain Syncing. This allowed it to share its Thread network with other iOS apps (HomeKit). Eventually, the Aqara M3 Hub also created its own Thread network, leading to network isolation and preventing other Thread devices in my household from communicating.

I’ve since decided that my Aqara M3 Hub will serve as the primary Thread Border Router. It will be responsible for commissioning all Thread devices and will be the first to commission and pair to other Matter controllers.

This brings us to Thread 1.4, which is poised to resolve these issues and significantly enhance interoperability. Thread 1.4 simplifies network joining and promotes network sharing. This means that new Thread 1.4 devices are designed to seamlessly join an existing Thread network instead of creating a new one. It also facilitates the sharing of network credentials, making it easier for new devices to onboard and for the network to expand.

Apple HomeKit plans to upgrade to Thread 1.4 in the fall. Given Aqara’s consistent leadership in interoperability, especially with its two-way Matter protocol, I anticipate they will continue these efforts with Thread 1.4.

@Chihoo please see my comment. 1.4 will definitely help thread devices work better. Many user have not had a good experience with thread devices. Especially pairing them for the first time.

@Nicholas.Aqara thank you for that information. As mentioned in my follow up comment above: Given Aqara’s consistent leadership in interoperability, especially with its two-way Matter protocol, I anticipate they will continue these efforts with Thread 1.4.
