Market Co-Creation Survey: W200 Smart Thermostat for EU Market | Share Your Needs on Power, Price & Receiver

Hi everyone,

We are planning to roll out our premium smart thermostat W200 to the European market, and we’re still at the very early product definition stage. We want to co-create this product together with European homeowners, heating installers and smart home enthusiasts, so your genuine feedback will directly shape the final product design.

Compared to budget thermostats like Tado/Meross with basic low-cost screens, our W200 will feature a high-end touch display, built-in millimeter wave presence radar, native Matter support and an integrated smart home gateway. These premium hardware features will raise total production costs, meaning this model will be more expensive than basic entry-level thermostats. We would really appreciate your honest thoughts on the three key questions below:

Q1: Preferred power supply mode for W200 EU

  1. Battery-powered (AAA batteries, no wall wiring needed)
  2. 5V 2A USB-C power supply (works with an external adapter)
  3. 230V live & neutral hardwired mains power

Q2: Expected retail price (EUR)

Taking into account the costly touch screen, mmWave radar, Matter protocol and built-in gateway, what retail price range do you find reasonable and acceptable for the W200?

Q3: Is a separate wireless Receiver module necessary?

Most European boilers and underfloor heating systems rely on a wired receiver to receive wireless commands from thermostats. Let us know if you think a standalone matching receiver is required, and feel free to explain your reasoning.

Hello, @XT-XianTang.
Glad to hear that Aqara is developing a W200 analog for Europe.
Q1. In my opinion, the optimal power solution would be combined power supply (220 V + 5 V USB adapter). This option would ensure universal thermostat placement.
Q2. —200 euros.
Q3. A wireless communication module powered by 220 V would be highly relevant in Europe.
First advantage — in houses with old heating systems where it is difficult to run additional wiring connections boiler → thermostat.
Second advantage — simplified module design for Aqara manufacturers, possibility to unload the control (main) module which would not contain switching relays.
Third advantage — the control (main) module can be quickly placed in any room of the house depending on the user’s needs.
Fourth advantage — the switching module can have more powerful relays for controlling high currents (electric heating) with direct control of heating elements or electric radiators.
If analyzed further, Q3 is a very important component in the projected W200 package.

Q1) 230V live & neutral hardwired mains power as this is a device that will be placed once and left there. With a high quality screen batteries won’t last long and it would be a pain exchanging them every few weeks

Q2) depending on the exact functionality something in the 200-300 Euro range

Q3) definitely yes as I would expect the thermostat often to be placed in a different space as most existing thermostat installations haven’t been optimized for a placement of a screen or mmWave sensor

Ideally the screen could be used to control things beyond the thermostat. I’d dream of a device that would allow me to connect it to my Home Assistant (no need to run HA in the device, it should be a client to it connecting to it’s API to get access to the devices etc.)

That’s a cool bonus for the W200 (for modern boilers), but it will immediately drive up the device cost.
Although my experience shows that for most boiler users, this option is a complete mystery. Usage is limited to raising/lowering the heat carrier (hot water) temperature on the boiler and forgetting where they adjusted it an hour later. :rofl:

Hi gafich10, I have a question regarding this power supply option: 220V mains power + 5V USB adapter. Do you mean that the display is powered by 220V (live and neutral) and can also be powered via a Type‑C charging cable?

Regarding the W200 EU display, do you think it should come with boiler control wiring? Alternatively, shall we develop a separate receiver unit so that the W200 EU functions solely as a display panel without boiler control wiring, only requiring a power supply cable?

Yes, I mean the combined version (220 phase/zero). Since the internal module will have a 220->5 volt converter, why not output an additional Type‑C connector.
I power the old Aqara relays with 5 volts and they have been working flawlessly for 5 years.

By the way, the included block (which is near the boiler) is to power 220 (phase/zero) and be a repeater. In a word, one W200 thermostat consists of two interconnected blocks.
You wanted our suggestions, we turned on the imagination. :grinning:

yes, opentherm is supported by every boiler in Europe, it’s mandatory standard

In my case, I have central heating with two wires, which makes the thermostat a simple switch. This is very common in individual central heating systems in Europe, therefore:
Q1: Wired, but with batteries to power the display, there’s no need to invent anything; Tado, Netatmo, and others do it this way, super compatible with all systems.
Q2: I wouldn’t pay anywhere near more than 150 euros without a wireless receiver or 190 with a wireless receiver. I understand the improvements in the display, but it’s a thermostat, and the competition works perfectly; I have the Tado X without a wireless receiver bought for 89 euros.
Q3: Absolutely yes, but optionally—those who don’t need it shouldn’t have to pay more, and those with non-wired or older systems should still be able to install it.

Q1: 230V

Q2: 99€ just for measuring temperature and controlling the heating. I would need to replace at least 9 units (150m2 house) and over 200€ per device would be quite expensive.

If the device would measure additionally CO2 (carbon dioxide), Humidity, Temperature, CO (carbon monoxide) and presence (like FP2), then I am ready to pay 200€.

My justification is that with one device I would be able to solve following use cases: Safety (CO), Security (FP2), Lights (FP2), Ventilation (Humidity), Heating (Temparature). Currently I have multiple devices or some use cases are not covered in every single room. Also, current solution partially require battery replacements, which will be solved with 230V connection of termostats.

Q3: I need the control unit to control 230v floor heating valves. Also I need a solution to connect wired floor temparture sensor, ideally without replacing the existing sensor (because it’s in the concrete floor), just connect the old sensor cables to new head unit. Wireless functionality is needed to get sensors’ data to the hub.

From the design perspective, then I don’t like US solution with plastic cover. The whole device (black part) should be designed, so that it could be easily attached on EU round socket and fully cover it without any plastic covers.

Ideally it would support it for the people that install it directly there but IMO most people would benefit from a separate recover unit.

Not sure it’s possible but maybe it could be designed in a way that the receiver unit can either be attached/plugged into to the screen unit and powered by it or detached and then mounted separately elsewhere.
