Matter 1.4.2 Enhancing Security and Scalability for Smart Homes

Matter 1.4.2 | Enhancing Security and Scalability for Smart Homes

Matter 1.4.2 Update: Key Highlights

  1. Wi-Fi-Only Commissioning
  • Devices can now onboard via Wi-Fi Unsynchronized Service Discovery (USD), eliminating the need for Bluetooth LE.
  • Reduces hardware costs and enables firmware updates for existing Wi-Fi devices.
  1. Enhanced Security
  • Vendor ID Verification ensures Admins (ecosystems) are authentic.
  • Access Restriction Lists (ARLs) protect network infrastructure settings.
  • Certificate Revocation Lists (CRLs) block compromised devices.
  1. Improved Scenes Management
  • Standardized support for scenes with the ability to create temporary effects (e.g. fade-out).
  • Faster, more synchronized execution across devices.
  1. Optimized Network Efficiency
  • “Quieter Reporting” reduces unnecessary data traffic, improving battery life and responsiveness.
  1. Standardized Node Reconfiguration
  • Devices automatically notify controllers of new features after updates, avoiding reconfiguration.
  1. Consistent Endpoint Unique IDs
  • Prevents duplicate devices when reconnecting or switching ecosystems.
  1. Robot Vacuum Cleaner (RVC) Standardization
  • Predictable behavior for commands (e.g., no need to cancel jobs manually).
  1. Stronger Network Infrastructure Requirements
  • Thread Border Routers must support 150+ devices (Thread 1.4).
  • Wi-Fi APs need 100+ connectionsand Target Wake Time (TWT) for efficiency.
  1. Faster, More Reliable Certification
  • Updated test plans for valves, fans, and access control ensure better device quality.

Matter is getting better everyday. I love the new vacuum fixes, because that needed some improvement for sure! Great things are to come.

When will this be rolled out into an M3 firmware update?

Great to see the standard evolve. Will be great to see when the ultimate aim of Matter is finally delivered, and the standard can expand to cover all use types. Will be great to just pull together a Matter device collection and know that it will integrate and operate seemlessly across brands … but naturally with more Aqara devices than any otehr as it behaves thenicest with the Matter standard
