What does the Matter announcement mean for the G4?
I use Home Assistant without Apple devices. I’m very interested in integrating the G4, including the video stream.
Will this work with the doorbell firmware 4.3.5 and the app 5.1.9? Currently, the doorbell is running 4.0.6_0024.0072, and the app is running 5.1.8.

To support Expanded Matter Device functionality, a product must have 【Matter Controller】capabilities. Currently, this feature is only available on select Aqara hubs/gateways. Since the G4 is a standalone doorbell, it does not include this functionality.
For Matter Controller support, I’d recommend exploring other Aqara products with hub capabilities, such as Hub M3 (Hub M100 and G5 Pro Camera will also support soon). These devices are designed to enable the expanded functionality you’re looking for.

Does that mean that the G4 works with Home Assistant (incl. video streaming) wegen I buy a M3 hub?

This announcement only applies to matter controller , and doorbell is not one so it will not be supported in G4.

Hey, I bought g4 dorbell as the product claimed that will recieve support matter via OTA after standard will support cameras. Those claims can stll be found on multiple resellers and reviews. And now you are saying that it will eventually not support matter? Can I return it back?

Same here. I don’t want to reutrn doorbell but replace with model that supports matter. It’s already mounted waiting for ota update. I’m still on version 4.0.6.

I’m a bit worried too that Aqara won’t follow through on supporting Matter on the G4 doorbell really. It was marketed as supporting Matter when it’s available, and was a key reason why I bought it instead of others. Quoting their March 2023 press release:
Apart from the Aqara ecosystem, the G4 doorbell also supports major third-party smart home platforms including Apple Home, Amazon Alexa and Google Home. This device is one of the few battery-powered video doorbells on the market that support Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video as well as the local streaming to Amazon and Google smart displays. Moreover, Aqara anticipates adding the support of the new Matter standard to the G4 via a future OTA (over the air) update.
Granted, Matter 1.5 was only announced a month ago, so they likely need time to consider the spec and build support for it. That’s okay, but an announcement confirming that would help.
