Maximizing Camera Security with Smart Automation

I’ve been really impressed with how my indoor cameras have enhanced my home security. I recently set up an automation where my camera records between midnight and six in the morning, regardless of whether I’m home or not. Additionally, it records when we’re not home, which gives me peace of mind while I’m away.

The setup was pretty straightforward using the Home Assistant GUI. I created two scenes: one to turn the camera on and another to turn it off. I also set up triggers based on time and presence detection. However, I ran into an issue where the phone’s presence detection was causing the camera to turn off unexpectedly during the night.

After some troubleshooting, I realized that the presence detection was too sensitive and was being triggered by the phone moving around at night. I adjusted the automation to ignore presence detection between midnight and six in the morning, which solved the problem. Now, the camera stays on during those hours, and I don’t get any false alerts.

One tip I have for others setting up similar automations is to test the presence detection thoroughly. Make sure it’s not too sensitive and that it accurately reflects your home’s occupancy. Also, consider setting up a delay between the trigger and the action to avoid any accidental activations.

Overall, this setup has been a game-changer for my home security. I feel much more secure knowing that my cameras are always watching out for me, even when I’m not home. If anyone has any questions or suggestions about setting up similar automations, I’d be happy to help!
