Merging Philips Hue Bridges: Benefits and Considerations

I’ve been exploring the possibility of merging my Philips Hue bridges, and I wanted to share my findings and experiences with the community. As many of you know, I’ve been using Hue for quite some time now, and while it’s been a fantastic experience, managing multiple bridges can become a bit cumbersome.

Recently, I decided to add a second Hue bridge to accommodate the growing number of lights and accessories in my home. While the addition itself was straightforward, I couldn’t help but wonder about the benefits of merging these bridges into a single account. After some research, I discovered that Hue now allows users to combine multiple bridges under one account, which seemed like a great way to simplify management.

One of the key advantages I anticipated was the ability to control all my Hue devices from a single interface. This would not only streamline my setup but also make it easier to create scenes and automate routines across all my lights. However, I was also concerned about how this merge might affect my existing setup, particularly with regards to my Hubitat system.

After some experimentation, I found that merging the bridges was a relatively smooth process. The Hue app made it easy to add the second bridge to my account, and the transition didn’t disrupt my existing automations or scenes. That said, I did notice a few things that might be worth considering for anyone else looking to merge their bridges:

  1. Device List Updates: When you merge bridges, the Hubitat device list will update to reflect the combined inventory. This means you’ll need to review and reorganize your devices to ensure everything is labeled correctly.
  2. Scene and Automation Review: While most of my scenes and automations carried over without issue, I did need to manually adjust a few that were bridge-specific. It’s a good idea to review all your routines after the merge to ensure everything works as expected.
  3. Firmware and Software Compatibility: Ensuring that both bridges are running the latest firmware was crucial for a seamless merge. I recommend checking for updates before proceeding with the merge process.

Overall, I’m very pleased with the results. Merging my Hue bridges has made my smart home setup more cohesive and easier to manage. I’d love to hear from others who have gone through this process—what were your experiences? Did you encounter any challenges, or were there any unexpected benefits?

Let’s keep the conversation going and help each other make the most of our smart home setups!
