Motion Sensor Noob Question: Why did it stop after linking to HomeKit?

Alright, total Aqara/HomeKit rookie here.

Just set up my Aqara Motion Sensor P1, and it was working perfectly in the Aqara app. Detected movement, no issues. Then I added it to Apple Home via the Home app, and boom—motion detection just flat-out stopped. It shows up in the Home app, but it doesn’t register any motion at all now.

Not sure if I messed up the automation or if there’s something simple I’m missing. Thought these two were supposed to play nice together?

I’m using an iPhone 14, latest iOS, and an M2 iPad as the hub. All firmware up to date.

Did anyone else have this happen? Does adding to HomeKit override settings in the Aqara app? And should I just reset and start over?

Appreciate any help—feeling a little lost here.

@IsabellaRodriguez It sounds like you’re encountering a common issue when integrating Aqara devices with Apple HomeKit. Here’s a bit of insight that might help resolve your problem:

When you add the Aqara Motion Sensor P1 to HomeKit, it should still function as it does in the Aqara app, but sometimes there are a few hiccups that can occur during the initial setup. Here are a few steps you can try:

  1. Check Automations and Permissions: Ensure that the Home app has the necessary permissions to access the motion sensor and that automations are correctly set up. Sometimes, reconfiguring these settings can resolve detection issues.

  2. Reset the Motion Sensor: You might want to reset the sensor and re-add it to see if this resolves the issue. To reset, press the reset button on the sensor for 3 seconds until the indicator flashes three times, returning it to factory settings. Re-add it to the Aqara app first and then to HomeKit.

  3. Hub Placement: Make sure your M2 iPad, acting as a Home Hub, is placed in a location where it can effectively communicate with the motion sensor. A poor connection might result in the sensor not reporting correctly.

  4. Firmware and Software Updates: You’ve mentioned that everything is up to date, but it’s always a good idea to double-check for any recent updates that might have rolled out after you checked last.

  5. Check for Overlapping Configurations: Sometimes, there could be overlapping configurations between the Aqara app and HomeKit. Ensure that the settings in both apps don’t conflict.

If these steps don’t resolve your issue, it might be helpful to reset and start over, as you mentioned. This fresh start can sometimes clear any unexpected issues from the initial setup.
